KreatureKind: Meet the Heroes who are Saving Magic by Debating Monsters
KreatureKind, the wholesome, card-battling adventure where words replace swords, will launch on Xbox Series X|S on June 27, 2025. This cozy roguelite deckbuilder invites players into a hand-drawn world where kindness and compassion might just save magic.

Debate Your Way Through a Monster-Filled World
In KreatureKind, you will not be swinging swords or casting destructive spells. Instead, you build your decks with compassion-powered cards designed to charm, reason with, and reassure quirky and lovable monsters. The world is packed with colorful cryptids and mythological creatures who are in desperate need of empathy.
Players step into the role of a group of activists on a mission to conserve mana, a magical energy being frivolously wasted at alarming rates. Your team sets out to inspire change by talking, listening, and showing that empathy can be just as powerful as any weapon.

KreatureKind blends tactical deckbuilding with a tongue-in-cheek story. Each encounter is a challenge that asks you to think strategically, and reconsider what it means to be heroic. With its humor, warmth, and truly adorable monsters, KreatureKind also offers a gentle reflection on real-world conflict, sustainability and the power of dialogue.

Meet the Heroes
There are seven playable characters in KreatureKind, three of which can be brought into the encounters at a time. The one who was designed first and still remains the founder and face of the mana saving movement in the game is Riley, above. She has undergone quite a few changes throughout the years, from early concept to who you will meet today.
Most strikingly, the characters in the game used to have swords. It was never about physical combat, however, as these magical weapons enhanced whatever innate abilities their wielders had – be it compassion, humor, or hacking skills. However, promoting a non-violent game with swords proved, perhaps not too surprisingly, to be a challenge. The swords were eventually scrapped and replaced with the means through which the characters use magic. Riley, for example, is a dancer – which is why she got herself a set of headphones.

Riley’s two BFFs Yui and Mitra were designed around the same time as her, back in the early days when the plan was to only feature female main characters. Yui is almost as passionate about digital art as she is about making the world a better place, and Mitra is a writer who dabbles in poetry as well as fanfiction (under a pseudonym). Later in the development, they were joined by the first non-female character Luca, the world-famous rockstar!

Completing the cast towards the later stages of development were Tau the cook, Finley the game developer, and Quinn the actor. They all have something keeping them from immediately joining the campaign to save magic – for Tau it’s his family’s restaurant, for Finley it’s deadlines and Quinn an upcoming premiere – but their colleagues and loved-ones can be convinced that their cause is more important if you, literally, play your cards right!

Each of these seven characters fit into the “holy trinity” you may be familiar with from RPGs. Luca, for example, is the most “DPS”-focused character, with the additional quirk that he can add cards to opponents’ decks. Quinn is a versatile character who supports the others in the most unpredictable ways – they can often target anyone with their cards or boost very specific play-styles for other characters, so make sure you choose their cards with care! Unlike in an RPG, you don’t improve your characters directly but instead by unlocking and upgrading their cards, as well as giving them plushies for permanent boosts.
Meta: The story behind the creation of the unique gameplay and characters in KreatureKind, coming to Xbox June 27.

Created with Heart
Inclusion and representation have been at the core of the development from the very beginning. I wanted to create a game where everyone can feel welcome and seen – both in terms of its characters, and also in how approachable the gameplay is. If you’re new to games, you should be able to pick KreautreKind up and feel empowered to try out different play styles. If you’re a veteran of card games, you will still find unique gameplay to explore.

After centuries of increasing magic use, the world’s mana well is running dry. If entirely depleted, magic will be gone forever.
This does not go unnoticed by Riley and her friends Mitra and Yui. They set out from their hometown, trying to convince people and monsters to use mana more consciously. Along the way, they meet and team up with other like-minded people. Who could resist Tau the cook’s warm hugs, Quinn’s epic role-playing sessions, or Finley’s thought-provoking games? Perhaps they will even befriend the world famous rockstar Luca! Each of the activists contribute to the cause with their unique sets of debate skills, which they hone along the way.
Easy to learn, hard to master
KreatureKind offers unique gameplay, which is approachable to beginners while still giving seasoned players a proper challenge. If you're new to this kind of game, you'll figure it out. Played every card battler on the market? These monsters will still give you a run for your money!
Discover, unlock, upgrade
Supercharge the seven playable characters by unlocking and upgrading cards! The mysterious former activist’s shop may just have the card you need to succeed. For a permanent boost to your team member’s debate skills, plushies give you the edge that will tip the scales in your favour.
Go on campaign
Win the game by convincing KreatureKind’s seven magical factions to join your cause! Enjoy exploring vibrant villages, forests, and cities filled with troubled creatures and charming NPCs. Debate your way through the randomly generated maps and persuade each of the faction leaders to support you.
